Learn How To Swim 101 Continuing To Improving The Backstroke

Traditionally people were taught to have their hand leave the water thumb first when doing the backstroke. However, this has now been modified so that the hand leaves the water palm down as in the picture (below) and the Backstroke Video form previously posted.

If the former where not the case then the latter would not be relevant so they are really the same.

The reason for this is two-fold.

  • First and most important it allows for that little extra push as the hand leaves the water.
  • Secondly, because it is more natural.

There is a third reason that is not generally recognized. That is that it allows for a more natural entry of the hand into the water that doesn't take away from the little finger entering first. That is the transition from the palm down to the little finger into the water is much easier than from the thumb water exit.

The thumb first exiting the water used to (and still does for those who teach it) generate a whole heap of faults that were and are often difficult to correct.

You can see how the transition is much easier when you look at the next picture (below).

Note the periscope effect of the hand and arm. This is the natural result of the back of the hand leaving the water first. And it is a simple and natural movement to the next stage of the little finger in first.

You should not try to force this. If you do you will end up creating more work for yourself than you need to and possibly as many faults.

That's it! By now you should be developing a smooth and comfortable backstroke and it is time to start to develop Freestyle. That will begin next time.

Enjoy
